Meet the Founder

Melanie Matta, M.A. | Superintendent | Leadership Coach | Speaker | Doctoral Student

I’m Melanie Matta, a small-school leader with big vision and a fierce belief in the power of human-centered leadership.

With over 24 years in education—and more than 13 of those spent in the administrative role, I know what it means to lead with heart, grit, and clarity. I’ve worn all the hats. I’ve faced the tough conversations, the budget meetings, the empty sub lists, and the moments of pure joy when a student finds their spark.

But I’ve also felt the isolation. The pressure. The constant push to be everything for everyone.

That’s why I created EdLeadership Lab.

Because our roles as leaders are too important, and too human, to keep doing them in survival mode. Small district leaders deserve real support, practical tools, and a space to be vulnerable, visionary, and bold.

The Innovative Leader’s 90-Day Entry Plan

I created this guide because I know what it feels like to be handed the keys and expected to lead—without a roadmap. When I first stepped into district leadership, I needed more than a checklist. I needed clarity. I needed connection. I needed something that spoke to the human side of leading.

So I built it.

The Innovative Leader’s 90-Day Entry Plan is the practical, people-centered tool I wish someone had handed me. It’s now being used by leaders across the country who want to build trust, lead with intention, and disrupt the status quo with courage and heart—starting from day one.

My Why

I lead and coach through the lens of equity, transparency, and deep care for students who are often overlooked by systems not designed with them in mind. I grew up and work in California’s Central Valley, where I’ve seen how resource gaps, policy constraints, and status quo mindsets can hold back progress. But I’ve also seen how innovative leadership, community voice, and relentless heart can shift an entire school culture.

I believe:

  • Data should be transparent and empowering, not weaponized.

  • Leadership isn’t about control, it’s about trust.

  • You can be both strong and soft. Strategic and soulful.

  • And that the best school leaders don’t have all the answers—they ask better questions.
